A Personal Training Testimony

_ I was recently given the great opportunity to attend the IDEA Personal Trainer Institute (conference) in Washington DC with my wonderful personal trainer wife.  Granted, I do have some understanding of the health and fitness business through my involvement with wife’s fitness studio operations and have been exposed to some of the latest exercise science and new training techniques and approaches in the fitness world today, but I was not expecting to be so overwhelmed about the intense dedication of the trainers to improving the fitness world. 

 At the conference, my wife hooked me up into a setup of educational lectures classes with business strategies, mobility, agility, stretching, training techniques, and program planning, however, these classes also included a workout portion where the principals of the lectures are applied in practical application.  Basically, they worked my butt off, with the premise that if you don’t experience the exercise, how can you properly teach it?

 My takeaway for this experience was that the fitness business is ever changing to better service the community who really are in need of fitness in their daily lives.  Did you know that 65% of the adult population in the US is overweight and of the same population that less than 20% regularly engage in physical activity?  Not to mention that 70% of kids are overweight or will be by the time they are all adults.   Scary stuff.

 The health and fitness business is changing to use more functional science and movement applications to physical activity to encourage a more efficient and much more effective routine of activity to help people improve their lives.  Personal training is all about the dedication and passion of these folks to help others to make a better quality of life.  Fitness is no longer about jumping on a treadmill and running for hours or lifting tons of weights. It is about using latest exercise techniques and fitness tool in the industry to target the communities health and fitness needs, whether it to lose weight, get in better condition, or training for an athletic event and at the same time to make it fun.   

 I was massively impressed listening to the leaders of the industry as they shared their knowledge in body movement, mobility, strength, agility, and endurance and how to apply that to each individual clients needs.  Personal trainers are a rare breed as they are challenged to get the public motivated to come in to the gym to workout, to makes sure they are providing the needed expertise to help those individual and to motivate them to continue to stay with the program m to improve their lives and to make a better quality of this for themselves and their loved ones who depend on them.    Since the ultimate goal is to motivate the community to become aware of their need for fitness and that it is not dull and momentous experience, but rather with the new approach to health and fitness in the industry today that it is challenging and enjoyable, we should rename the term workout to “funout”.
